Genzyme has developed Plerixa injection by the name: Mozobil which will enhance the mobilization of stem cells in patients suffering from incurable diseases such as blood cancer lymphoma and multiple myeloma and require an autologous stem cell transplant. Mozobil has also been approved by the European commission.
According to Mohmad Mohty, MD, Stem Cell Transplant Program at the University Hospital, France said Mozobil has the potential to transform the field of stem cell transplantation. This treatment will allow more and more patients to go for the treatment of their malignant diseases moving towards potential autologous stem cell transplantation.
Plerixa for injection was evaluated in 2 randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled, phase 3 studies in patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.Patients were given plerixa with a combination of Granulocyte- colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). It is used to release hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream, and is collected. This makes a patient more confident proceeding for autologous transplantation.
