If you still use an old feature phone, you’re probably fine. The increasingly ubiquitous smartphone, unfortunately, is the most dangerous type of mobile to use. Every model of iPhone puts out a big ol’ dose of radiation (.52-1.19 W/kg for the 3GS). The Palm Pre and G1 also scored poorly, putting out .92 W/Kg and 1.11 W/Kg, respectively.

A report recommends minimizing any potential risk by using hands-free devices and keeping cell-phone talk to a minimum.

The wireless industry itself has resisted warnings or restrictions for its products. And it often points to research indicating that there is no link between cancer or other harmful health effects and cell phone use.

With 250 million mobile phone subscribers currently in India, and many more using other appliances like television, computer, vacuum cleaner, microwave etc, the fear is that these ‘essentials’ of life may actually be posing a big health risk because of their electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

As such, research has not yet established anything definite about the impact of EMFs on the human body. We use on a daily basis — microwaves, cordless phones, computer monitors, fax machines, cell phones, cell phone towers, hair dryers and so on.

Various international studies have tried to establish the link between EMFs and some diseases. Doctors believe that constant exposure to high frequency EMFs leads to digestive disorders, fatigue, hypertension, insomnia, irritability, low blood pressure, and infertility in males, cancer, neurological and cardiovascular problems.

In recent years, experts have been studying the impact of cell phones and cell phone towers on the human body, and the initial research results have not been too comforting. A recently published a research paper on the link between mobiles and brain cancer. Using mobiles for over 10 years could more than double the risk of brain cancer. Mobile phone radiation could heat the side of the head or thermoelectrically interact with the brain, while Bluetooth devices and “unshielded” headsets could “convert the user’s head into an effective, potentially self-harming antenna”.

Similarly, cell phone towers are a cause of concern. A researcher in the  found that exposure to radio frequency (RF) signals generated by the use of cellular phones has increased dramatically and is reported to affect physiological, neurological, cognitive and behavioral changes and to induce, initiate and promote carcinogenesis.

Cell phones when kept close to beehives drastically reduced the bee population within a short time span. A beehive is a colony that has the eggs, the queen bee and the worker bees. The job of the worker bees is to travel, collect nectar and reach back to its beehive.

Electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones and the towers interfere with the navigational skills of the worker bees, as a result the worker bees fail to reach their home destination. Without the worker bees, the beehives are left only with the queen and the eggs resulting in a total collapse.

A cell phone tower can collapse a colony in just 10 days. With more number of cell phone towers it is estimated that the bees may be extinct within 10 years.

Other experiments show that workers, who constitute around 90% of bees in a hive, abandon it when a mobile device is placed near it. A person “Placed mobile device 10 metres off a hive for 5-10 days, after which worker bees never returned. The massive radiation from mobile phones and towers is frying navigational skills of bees,” he said.

The environmentalist believes atmospheric electromagnetic radiation is responsible for this colony collapse disorder, characterised by mass disappearance of workers who buzz about collecting honey and pollinating flowers.

In the US west coast, this apian disorder is such an ecological disaster that colonies of bees are hired to pollinate almond plantations. Apiarists’ blame theories vary from viruses and bacteria to pesticides and radiation.

“Bees and other insects have evolved complex immunity systems over millions of years. Now, why would they suddenly die out due to diseases and parasites?

“Insects and small animals would naturally be the first to be affected by an increase in ambient radiation. Behavioral patterns of bees alter when they are in close proximity to mobile phone towers. The vanished bees were never found, thought to have died,” he said.
